Take a look around at this world of ours It’s a strange old place indeed Where we all have to fight for the right to live Seems a funny old world to me You get newspapers bought by the working man But they don’t really have any news It’s all bingo, boobs & Tv Stars What a funny old thing to do Who’s gonna dance? Who’s gonna dance? Who’s gonna dance with me? As I try to hold onto my dignity It’s a funny old world to me Soap operas are the business now But the longest running of them all Has the nation out with their flags and shouts As they go for a march down the mall There’s a man in Rome and he tells us all You must only mate to breed But if you can’t conceive, the test tube’s out It’s a funny old world indeed Who’s gonna dance? Who’s gonna dance? Who’s gonna dance with me? Well I seem to be losing my sanity It’s a funny old world to me There’s more and more people claiming benefits So what does the government do? Cut Staff in the Dhss Does that make any sense to you? Clothes are a clue to your politics Say the Magazines that we read So the poor dress up and the rich dress down It’s a funny old world indeed Who’s gonna dance? Who’s gonna dance? Who’s gonna dance with me? Well I seem to be losing my sanity It’s a funny old world to me

Ten pence, cuppa tea, thanks guv I can see you’re a real gent People look at me, don’t like what they see, hate the life that I’ve spent And I freeze! Come take a peep, see where we sleep Come sample what the world is like out on the street We once had lives, we paid the rent But now we’re all of us the world’s forgotten men With the down & outs I go walkbout begging all I can get All those men in suits, holding down their roots, one thing they all resent Is I’m free! Come take a peep, see where we sleep Come sample what the world is like out on the street We once had lives, we paid the rent But now we’re all of us the world’s forgotten men We didn’t ask to be living in luxury but neither did we ask for this Can’t look us in the eye coz you all realise anyone could come to this Still I freeze! Come take a peep, see where we sleep Come sample what the world is like out on the street We once had lives, we paid the rent But now we’re all of us the world’s forgotten men

Do you wanna be a Mogul? Do you wanna be a Jr? Do you wanna play the market like the Big Boys do? Do you wanna be a City Star? Well all you need is chickenfeed and you can own a company In the sale of the century Well it’s all done now by computer and you don’t even need a degree Just a little bit of dough & a Vdu Could set you up nicely indeed And all you need is chickenfeed and you can own a company In the sale of the century Well it’s all going up for grabs now, all of life’s little luxuries Like fuel and transport and communication They’d even sell the air that you breathe And all you need is chickenfeed and you can own a company In the sale of the century Right who’ll start the bidding of at a million? Do I hear two million? Three? Who’ll give me four million? Do I hear five? Going at five million Going, going, gone!

On Fire 04:08
I used to be a proud man and so respected in this town But it’s amazing just how short a time it takes to bring a man right down I was as honest as the day was long, I was reliable and sound But now I’ve lost my self respect and all I do is mooch around It’s burning up my brain, desire I’m burning up with shame My hear and soul is going up in flames On fire! I get confronted with the other half, I hate the way they pose and preen The way they flaunt their wealth around, to me it’s all a bit obscene I guess they really don’t know what it’s like to own nothing but your dreams Coz they will always be the first to condemn your survival schemes It’s burning up my brain, desire I’m burning up with shame My hear and soul is going up in flames On fire! All I want is a decent life, a little comfort of my own I’ve worked for it but it’s all been blown through no fault of my own When you’ve got nothing but a pile of debt and desperation’s setting in When you’re reliant on charity just to do everyday things A little cheating, just a little fiddle seems the only way to choose Well so you might get caught but then again you’ve nothing left to lose It’s burning up my brain, desire I’m burning up with shame My hear and soul is going up in flames On fire!

I always say when we’ve called it a day That’s the end, no more heavy relations again But I know in a while I’ll be head over heels again I’ll never change I’m addicted to love Isn’t it great having no-one to answer to Do what you feel any time that you want to But oh in the night there aint no-one to hug you I can’t seem to change I’m addicted to love I’m doing alright, out every night Then I see her and something goes bang And it’s great being close looking into your eyes A new face to explore and we both realise That we both feel the same, this is just where we want to be Always the same I’m addicted to love Coz I can’t let go, can’t give it up I can’t let go I’m addicted to love

On saturday they play their game, get special buses, special trains The rest of us must all make way, here we go here we go again The Mob mentality’s what reigns The streets on saturday ain’t safe It’s the hate game! (Do you want to be a hero, No-one else sees you that way Do you want to be a martyr for a stupid game) You think it makes you such a man to hold a weapon in your hand To mutilate somebody’s face and put your country in disgrace And so they implement a ban That makes you one real stupid man At the hate game! (Do you want to be a hero, No-one else sees you that way Do you want to be a martyr for a stupid game) This male togetherness is strange and it’s no longer just a game This misplaced loyalty and pride is no excuse for homicide But you won’t have your way for long The rest of us won’t sing your song At the hate game! (Do you want to be a hero, No-one else sees you that way Do you want to be a martyr for a stupid game)

Well I was only seventeen when we went and tied the knot We were love’s young dream, we were full of it, we had flowers we had the lot We didn’t think about anything, we just gazed into each others eyes When we said “I Do” We were so made up we just raised our heads to the skies Well this is all we’d heard about and more So we smiled and shut the door But then we smiled no more Kids came quickly one, two, three, we played happy families I went to work while you stayed at home bouncing babies on your knees It was difficult to make ends meet on a single salary So we both took turns at going out, it was the only way it could be Well this is all we’d heard about and more So we smiled and shut the door But then we smiled no more Time passed quickly, years went by I never knew before how time could fly We looked so old then it came to me I didn’t know you and you didn’t know me Now that we are twenty-five seems that life is passing us by All of our friends are doing things, leading such exciting lives While we drink too much, we fight too much, it’s a struggle just to get by Still together, still as one but leading separate lives Well this is all we’d heard about and more So we smiled and shut the door But then we smiled no more Love’s young dream!

Northern woman on her knees, got no money with a family to feed Her friends are calling “Wer’re Leaving Town” the bright lights beckon southward bound There’s lots of money on the street in the city of glitter where no-one sleeps You get rich, rich tourists & businessmen seeking pleasure & eager to spend You take what work you can get these days The work may stink but at least it pays Those bleating moralists can go to hell If it’s all you’ve got it’s all you’ve got to sell It’s the love game! For fifty pence you can take a peep, other services aint quite so cheap Victorian values the price to sell, but do victrian morals apply as well? Enterprise is all we hear about It’s what government ministers drone on and on about It’s service industries they advocate Lie back think of England, isn’t life just great On the love game! Men will always want to pay, it’s a weakness that won’t go away Yet people still look down on you, but really who’s taking advantage of who The law will still come down on you You’re the one who’s punished for what you do Still the customer walks away But he’ll be back another day On the love game!

Eating fish & chips in Tony’s Café Chasing one another through the park Watch the girls go walking down the precinct Kissing at the bus stop after dark Here she comes now, here she comes now looking good Here she comes now, here she comes now looking good This is the best time of our lives We can have the best time of our lives Trips out to the beach during the summer Playing football on the burning sand Some try to be cool some to be macho Watch the girls walk down the promenade Here she comes now, here she comes now looking good Here she comes now, here she comes now looking good This is the best time of our lives We can have the best time of our lives This one is special, she is so special I think she might like me, I’ll ask her name Watching horror movies at the fleapit She hangs onto my arm when she screams Walk home through the snow she’s like an Angel Kiss he at her door then home to dream Here she comes now, here she comes now looking good Here she comes now, here she comes now looking good This is the best time of our lives We can have the best time of our lives

Here is a man who knows his mind, he’s got a business that’s worldwide He isn’t one for taking sides, he’s got a growing enterprise With advanced technology he’ll help you ward off enemies He really knows where he’s coming from coz he really knows how to make a bomb Gather round and see his new creation Guaranteed to blow you to damnation Guns and Rockets on the way, lines his pockets every day! Guns and Rockets on the way, lines his pockets every day! At the convention you’ll see him sell to the Middle East, the states as well As he wines & dines the ministry men and takes them for a spin in the jet again He really knows how to advertise to the men with power in their eyes Never let them forget the soviet threat, it’s a matter of time, a real safe bet Gather round and see his new creation Guaranteed to blow you to damnation Guns and Rockets on the way, lines his pockets every day! Guns and Rockets on the way, lines his pockets every day! What an asset to the economy says the queen as he goes down on one knee What a knight in shining armour he makes the world so safe for you and me Here is a man who knows his mind, he’s got a business that’s worldwide He really knows where he’s coming from coz he really knows how to make a bomb Gather round and see his new creation Guaranteed to blow you to damnation Guns and Rockets on the way, lines his pockets every day! Guns and Rockets on the way, lines his pockets every day!

There was a dream that we had long ago of a future we all could enjoy There was a hope in our hearts that we worked towards, a strategy we could employ We’d all work together, we’d work hell for leather To bring us prosperity, health & longevity We’d have it all, how could we fall? Naively we believed it all House that crumble down, dreams that then tumble down, this is the place where we live Freezing in winter’s cold, starving both young and old, what sort of future is this? Scared to go out, just as scared to stay in Scared of murder and rape, scared of no escape This is here this is now, this is any old town and it’s happening now, look around Always encouraged to look after ourselves But that means we all end up fighting among ourselves Fighting for slices of one very small pie So fight for your lives or give up and die Somebody somewhere is doing quite well from this They must be laughing at our futile efforts To better ourselves, to procure us Some wealth That is so out of reach, so out of reach Time that we all stopped and thought what we’re doing and looked for a better way I don’t believe there are so many people who want things to be this Time for some trust, time to shake of the dust Of this modern society with ancient philosophy Your life is today and it won’t go away, don’t bury your head in decay It’s happening, it’s happening, it’s happening, it’s hapenning today

Well I sat in the class as they told their plan How to be a success, a respectable man And they made me compete with the rest of the herd If you lose that’s too bad only winners get the reward They’re telling me what I should be! Well I sat in the flat with the Tv switched on And the newspaper open to find out what’s going on Be a man, have a pint, take a look at page 3 Watch the football and leave the important things to me They’re telling me what I should be! Don’t be a fool, just follow the rules they taught you in school Just do what’s right and you’ll be alright and you can sleep tight Well it seems what I’ve earned is the right to exist And the right to be me is a chance that I’ve missed In another place in a different time Well the rules of the game might have been a little kinder They’re telling me what I should be!
